To all the people who have recognized the importance of Hip Hop Kulture on their lives in the past and the significance real Hip Hop can make, we need you now. The Gospel of Hip Hop is a book that has taken over 13 years to write and the totality of life experiences of KRS ONE to finally be presented to you in 2009. It is by far the most important book ever written about Hip Hop Kulture. It explains where Hip Hop comes from, with an in-depth look at the elements of the culture. It has transcripts of the important Meeting of the Minds conference held by Afrika Bambaataa in the mid-nineties which spawned this books creation. It has transcribed the Declaration of Peace presented to the United Nations, and the details of its mission to UNESCO, the UN body which welcomed a host of Hip Hop luminaries and pioneers to the dedication ceremony. And most importantly, it details the spiritual and philosophical basis behind the founding principles of Hip Hop that have made it the powerful force, recognized all over the World. These ideas about Hip Hop Kulture must be passed on to inspire the next generation of youth, who today have been mislead and betrayed by the same cultures that Hip Hop overcame, to become a billion dollar art form for so many. Hip Hop's power is the PEOPLE who believe in the founding principles of peace, love, unity and safely having fun, not the masses. With only the few, who truly had Love for Hip Hop as a culture, was the rest of the World redefined by its presence. Only a few people had to have enough insight and Love for Hip Hop to pass on that feeling to a whole society and then the World. Hip Hop rose from oppressed streets to corporate suites, to tv screens and magazines. At the beginning there was alot of doubt about its validity and significance. But look at what has changed since the beginning. At the beginning of Hip Hop's development as an art form in the 1970's, there was no internet, no bloggers, no independent radio and tv that could reach the World instantaneously. We have all that at our fingertips now. We don't have to waste that power just on the promotion of the lower nature of ourselves and gossip. We can promote anything we want. Hip Hop as a culture has come a long way since the 1970's. The story is not over though. With the dropping of this book, The Gospel of Hip Hop by KRS ONE, from the epicenter of True Hip Hop Kulture, a new chapter will be written. A new generation can at least take inspiration of the alternate paths to follow. With our support, we can give them alternatives to choose from. We can show them the roots of something as great as Hip Hop and show them something many of them have overlooked. With this book, each of us has less to try to put into words when explaining the significance of Hip Hop Kulture to someone who doesn't know. We now have with this book, a new tool to bring the youth back on track and even steer each other toward a stronger faith in ourselves as Hiphoppas. With your support in obtaining your own copy of the book and telling someone else about it, we can begin to spread a new covenant amongst our culture, a culture that is Worldwide!
Our movement began in 1989 with the Stop the Violence Movement which produced an all-star recording entitled , “Self-Destruction”, which featured Doug E. Fresh, D-Nice, Heavy D, M.C. Lyte, Just Ice, MC Delite, Wise, Daddy-O, Fruit Kwan, Kool Moe Dee, Ms. Melodie, Public Enemy, and KRS ONE, advocating the unity of Hip Hop through non-violent conflict resolution. Through the Stop the Violence Movement’s many summits and conferences, we began to establish an authentic Hip Hop common spirit and began to give meaning and purpose to Hip Hop globally. It was around this time that we began to see ourselves as a community of specialized people; we began to refer to Hip Hop as a “culture”. The STVM went on to inspire the West coast peace anthem, “All in the Same Gang,” featuring King Tee, Body & Soul, Def Jeff, Michel’le, Tone Loc, Above The Law, N.W.A., J.J. Fad, Young M.C., Digital Underground, Oaktown’s 3.5.7., M.C. Hammer, and Eazy-E. This effort was followed up by the 1991 Human Education Against Lies (H.E.A.L.) movement, which advocated the conduct of advanced civilization within the Hip Hop community and human ingenuity over destructive technologies and technological dependency. HEAL also produced an all star recording entitled, “Heal Yourself,” featuring Kid Capri, Big Daddy Kane, Freddy Foxxx, L.L.Cool J, M.C. Lyte, Ms. Melodie, Queen Latifah, DMC, Jam Master Jay and KRS ONE. In 1994 we realized that rap was something that was done, while Hip Hop was something that was lived. We realized that Hip Hop was far more than just a music genre, that it was a collective urban consciousness that produced not only the expression of rapping, but also breakin, Deejayin, graffiti writing, and beat boxin. Through much debate and observation we realized the term “Hip Hop” never actually enters the physical world, and that it(Hip Hop) only becomes physical when we become it. This led to the “I am Hip Hop” philosophy in 1994 and the establishment of the Temple of Hip Hop in 1996. The Temple of Hip Hop began as a Hip Hop preservation society and urban ministry focused upon the cultural expansion and spiritual development of Hip Hop. Since our beginning in 1996, our existence has served as an actual balancing force within Hip Hop’s cultural image in world history. Our approach to Hip Hop is indeed unique. While others are still preoccupied with how Hip Hop got started, the Temple of Hip Hop focuses more upon why Hip Hop got started. Why Hip Hop and why now? These questions led us to issue a worldwide census and questionnaire in 1997 which asked thousands of “Hiphoppas”: what is Hip Hop? How would you improve upon it? What would you like to see from Hip Hop? These responses, along with the notes from our Hip Hop conferences and summits, in addition to numerous interviews with Hip Hop’s founders, artists, activists, and authors, as well as 20 years of hands-on experience, with Hip Hop’s arts and sciences, produced the body of knowledge that we now call the “Gospel of Hip Hop.” The Gospel of Hip Hop is a uniquely written instrument designed to guide a new generation of Hiphoppas spiritually and establish the groundwork for a new Hip Hop nation. Peace and Blessings, My name is Kurt Nice. I represent an organization founded by KRS ONE that was created for the preservation of not only Hip Hop Kulture but the individual Hiphoppa within society. This organization is called the Temple of Hip Hop. You may have heard of it and hoped to find out information about how to join and further your hip-hop career. This organization however, is not actually created for the purpose of furthering hip-hop careers. Instead it is formed to uplift the consciousness of the Hip Hop community as a whole. As a Hip Hop Kultural Specialist, I have been instructed in the art/science of teaching an appreciation for true Hip Hop history and principles by the Teacha himself, KRS ONE. In various jobs on the road at many shows, I have learned first hand aspects of the trades of Emceein, Deejayin and promoting venues that are valuable to those who wish to pursue such a career. As the founder and creative producer behind the first widely sold video mixtape, Shades of Hip Hop, I have created forums for artists to promote their craft and debuted the popular careers of artists such as 50 Cent, Noreaga, Jay-Z, Canibus, Mos Def, Big Pun, Wyclef Jean and many others. From the early 90’s til now I have participated in Hip Hop from behind the scenes and as a host of many shows. During this time I have been on the cusp of changing technology from VHS tapes to DVDs, to hand to hand sales, to digital distribution and viral marketing. At this time we utilize fully operational 24 hour internet radio, and television as well as viral email marketing to promote the Hip Hop movement. It is with this experience and access that we seek to inspire a new generation of Hiphoppas who are willing to learn about the benefits of Hip Hop Kulture and how to practically apply it to their lives.
Mission We are creating a pathway to empowerment for artists, producers and industry personnel. A. A forum for artists to expand their knowledge of True Hip Hop Kulture as the basis for the expression of their art. B. Provide modern day artists with the tools to progress their craft independently of major record labels. 1. We promote self creation rather than trend-based imitation. Self-creation is the basis of the ideology behind the concept of originality in Hip Hop Kulture. 2. Explore the benefits of independent marketing that frees the artist from contracts which leave them restricted from economic growth. The bureaucracies of record labels with hidden fees, unnecessary middle-men and forfeiture of rights destroy the benefits of the capital artists create. 3. Restore a sense of responsibility for the products artists create. C. Give the artist examples of success to follow 1. Provide a mentoring process of studying the careers of those who have already traveled certain paths thru the industry. 2. Study what not to do and what to avoid in the business, especially the well documented downfalls and character issues that will impede a career. D. Promote artists of a higher caliber who have used these methods to further their career. 1. We will use our access to internet radio and video to promote what we consider quality artists. 2. Present Adult Contemporary Hip Hop to a variety of venues outside the normal small club scene. 3. Provide true Hiphoppas with more fulfilling products to consume.
